Dear Yours Truly Readers,
My phone rang on a Sunday afternoon. When I answered, it was my girlfriend.
I heard her crying on the other line; barely any words came out from her voice, other than a cry. When she finally calmed down, she said, “Matthew wants a divorce.” I was frozen and couldn’t talk as I continued to listen to her cry even more.
What do you say to someone who has been married to the same man for fifteen years and have four children? And that all she knew since her early twenties and gave up her career was to raise their children? What can you say to a woman who gave it all to her family as a doting mother of four and a supportive wife whose husband travelled weekly and saw each other on weekends because of his job? All I can say was, “After 15 years…I guess it’s just nothing to him…and he’s willing to throw everything away.” I wanted to say more, like “He’s a piece of s#*t! Or “He’s such an a@^!”; but, I chose to keep these sentiments to myself.
I had the courage to ask my friend why her husband wanted a divorce. She said that he didn’t love her anymore and that he had found someone else who gave him happiness he’s been longing for many years. I was waiting for more explanation. She didn’t share anything more than those words.
So I ask you, readers: Is it really that easy to give up fifteen years of your married life?
