A Visit at My In-Laws

Dear Yours Truly Readers,

Chad and I decided to visit his parents for a long weekend.  It’s been a while since I saw them.  If you remember, we celebrated the Holidays with our respective families – we haven’t done this since we got engaged 8 years ago.

The visit was worthwhile.  It gave me some alone time with my in-laws while Chad went for a massage, swam or worked out. Each time I got the chance to have quality conversations with them; it made me realize even more how lucky I am to be married to Chad.  He has great set of parents who are affectionate and nurturing.

My father in law is one of the wittiest, ingenious and keen individuals I’ve ever met.  He is a hard working father who was an exceptional provider for his family.  Chad respects his knowledge in any types of industries or trades.  He enjoys talking to him about our business, Yours Truly Wedding Albums. They can talk for hours – Melvin listens and contributes his opinions when asked.

Set In Your Own Ways

Dear Yours Truly Readers,

HELP!  I need your advice!

From my blog Love, Life and Leisure: A New Year’s Resolution I mentioned that one of my and Chad’s goals is to find a new home outside the city (suburbs!!!) since we are seriously thinking of starting a family.

As you know, Chad and I have been married for 6 years… going on 7 in September.  I am the only one left amongst my 5 girlfriends who doesn’t have a baby.  Now…we feel that it’s the right time.

I’m unconventional and I march to the beat of my own drums.  I’m also not easily affected with what others say about “trends”, or “what’s typical” – , much less “the norm”.  I go with my own flow as long as I don’t offend or hurt the people that surround me.

On Valentine’s day, women don’t want  a new blender, baking sheet or hard drive. Forget about practicality. Your woman wants a gift that makes her feel special, sexy, happy and loved.

How to know what she wants and not just what she needs? Think of her interests – food, yoga, fashion, romantic movies, music. Then ask yourself what would she like to have that she’d imagine your dashing self to give her on the big day.

Here are some suggestions.

Weekend Thoughts: Be Playful!

A few years ago before my grandfather passed away, he and I had an interesting conversation about “growing old”.

One of my male cousins was practicing his martial arts moves when he kiddingly made a punching gesture to my grandfather.  He quickly tried to block his punch but his reflex wasn’t fast enough to react.  And, he said, “If I was younger, I would have blocked that punch.”

Then he continued, “A lot of times I thought that I’m still young and can physically do things I used to do but when I try to do it, my body stops me.  In my heart and mind – I thought I can.  But, my heart still feels young just like how I was at 16.  I never realized that my body wouldn’t catch-up as fast as my heart, mind and soul can go.”

I had just graduated college in December and had gone to visit my boyfriend, who had a job in another state.  We intended to go Christmas shopping but he mentioned there was a neighborhood not far way that had amazing lights and decorations. So we started driving there to check it out and enjoy the season.

Traffic was horrendous, we crawled passed a sign that said “no driving on the shoulder”, which I jokingly pointed out.  The car in front of us put on its left turn signal, and my boyfriend pulled on to the shoulder to pass him.  I laughingly yelled at him, saying I had just read that sign!!!

Next thing I knew, there was a policeman behind us with its lights flashing.  I looked disbelievingly at my BF. Seriously? How did he not see the cop behind him?!

All he said to me while waiting for the cop to walk to the window was to not open the glove box, as he had lots of unpaid parking tickets in there.  Slightly panicked, I watched as my boyfriend was asked to step out of the car.  They talked a few minutes, then the policeman asked me to step out too.

He asked me how we were related, and if I could call someone to pick me up.  I said I was from out of state and didn’t know anyone here.  He thought that’s unfortunate, as he was going to have to take my BF in for many unpaid tickets. And that if we weren’t related, he couldn’t let me take boyfriend’s car.  HELP!  I had no idea what to do. They looked at each other, as if trying to come up with a solution. My boyfriend suddenly knelt down on one knee, and asked me to marry him!

I was confused as well as excited at the same time!  Turns out, since moving, boyfriend joined a football team and this policeman was a new friend from that team that I had never met before.  Sooo sneaky!

Share The Love Story Entry #15 – Since High School

A freshman in college, at 17, I could never have known the long haired redhead, Bobby, my friends were introducing me to would become my husband.  I was already dating someone else, at college 60 miles away, which happened to be the same college Bobby attended. Bobby was not seeing anyone at the time and as he continued to visit my friends (dating his roommates), we became friends.

Sophomore year I transferred to attend a larger school, and be with my boyfriend.  Unfortunately, we broke up shortly after.  Months passed and Bobby and I became better friends, running into each other on campus, local bars, and at parties.  It was at one of those parties that things changed.

The party, it turned out, was being thrown by two guys living off campus. My high school girlfriend was in town and knew one of the guys, so she and I went. Bobby, on the other hand, was a high school friend of the other guy, so he went.  Neither of us knew the other was going.

After about 2 hours, and not knowing a lot of people there, Bobby and l left together to go to a local bar and talk.  We wound up closing the place and he drove me back to the dorm, walking me up to my room.  As we said goodnight, he leaned over and kissed me.  He said he’d call me (something you did back then, pre-cell phones).

A month later, for my 19th birthday, we had our first planned date.  Before going to our usual campus hang out, bar with dancing, he asked where I wanted to eat and introduced him to Chinese food, something he’d never had.  The night went fabulously, and although we never actually planned it, we’ve seen each other every night since.

Share The Love Story #14 – Margarita Monday

On March 7, 2011 I met the love of my life, my best friend, my everything.

My mother, my friend, and myself went to Houlihan’s in Columbia, MD for Margarita Monday. This guy and two of his friends were sitting at the bar having drinks. One of the guys kept looking at me so I sparked up a conversation asking him what he was drinking, he had a Georgia Peach Long Island in a 23 oz mug. Before leaving the restaurant I went to the bathroom.

On the way to walk out the door the waitress stopped me and told me that my friend forgot to get her chicken that she ordered. After I got the chicken, I started to walk out the door and the one guy stopped me in my tracks to get my number.

That night we went on a date and the rest was history. We have been together ever since that first day we met and now we’re getting married on August 15, 2015. If it wasn’t for my friend forgetting her chicken we would’ve never exchanged numbers. And now I can’t wait to marry him.

Share The Love Story Entry #13 – 20 Years

I met my husband, Charles Covington III in high school. We entered as freshmen at Bishop Loughlin High School in 1994. He has explained to me that from the first moment he saw me, he knew he had to know me.

Once we became friends, he developed feelings for me. I didn’t feel exactly the same way. I enjoyed his company but I didn’t feel as strongly as he did. At 14 years old, Charles loved me, but as a young teenager, I couldn’t fathom the idea of loving a boy. Well, we only attended Bishop Loughlin for 1 year. I transferred to a great boarding school in Massachusetts; Charles attended another catholic school in Queens, NY.

We remained friends as best as we could despite the distance. Charles loved me so much that 1 summer, he took 2 buses to pick me up from my summer job & take me home. I always kept Charles in the “friend zone”. We lost touch after a while & then randomly saw each other on a bus one day. We reconnected & I ended up going to his prom. We both went away to college & I broke his heart. Hanging out with Charles & a guy I like from college at the same time was not a good idea. After this incident, we didn’t speak for years.

In 2012, I was engaged to be married to the love of my life (or so I thought). One day, I was on Facebook & received a pop up asking if I knew Charles Covington. I was very surprised because we didn’t have any mutual friends. I sent him a message, apologizing for how I treated him & hoped that we could be Facebook friends. Lucky for me, he had no hard feelings & excepted my Facebook friendship.

Share The Love Story Entry #12 – Becca and Dakota

February 2, 2015
Yours Truly Professional Wedding Album Company

Here’s our love story and how he popped the question twice.

Dakota was born in February. Six months and 25 days before that Becca was born in the same town. Little did Becca know that 22 years and a few days after she was born, she would marry Dakota in front of family and friends.

As kids, Dakota and Becca knew of each other, but were too shy to be friends. Dakota had a huge crush on Becca and was devastated when she moved 1000 miles away. Unfortunately that would have been the end of the story, if not for Facebook.

As Becca remembers it January 2011: Dakota friended me first, but I had to ask my mom who he was because I didn’t remember his name. I friended him and thought he was pretty cute. I sent him a hello message, but he never responded, so I gave up on him. As Dakota remembers it May 2011: I saw Becca had messaged me and I was so freakin’ excited. I messaged her back and then we started texting on my phone. And we haven’t stopped talking since.

Dakota and I talked so much that we started long-distance dating. Our first date was watching a movie in the virtual theater on the Xbox. Shortly after we talked about getting married, but neither of us made a move, until Dakota moved 1000 miles to be with me. He reminds me of this all the time.

Jan. 14, 2013 we went out to a late lunch at Rubio’s, a fresh Mexican grill. We sat under a leafy umbrella table in an empty restaurant and flirted while waiting for our food. Then Dakota said “I really want to marry you.” I stared at him with a curious expression wondering if it was a proposal or just a comment like we had talked before. Then he asked, “Will you marry me?” I was so excited and said yes.
